This Gutter-Free Watercolor Sketchbook is inspired by traditional Chinese butterfly binding and double-layer paper mounting. Butterfly binding opens softly like the wings of a butterfly, while double-layer paper mounting joins layers of paper together to create a stronger, more supportive surface.
We brought these ideas into a modern watercolor sketchbook to solve a common problem for artists: the interruption of the center gutter. By pairing two sheets of 300gsm cotton watercolor paper into one thicker 600gsm surface, each spread opens naturally into a flatter, more continuous painting space.
The added thickness gives the paper a more substantial feel and better support for wet watercolor techniques, helping the surface stay more stable through washes, layering, and expressive brushwork.
